WRIST RING
OVERVIEW
The client expressed a desire to enhance the overall quality of an existing space suit costume by replacing the flimsy plastic wrist rings with more durable CNC-lathed aluminum wrist rings. This upgrade aimed to improve both the aesthetic appeal and the structural integrity of the costume, ensuring a more authentic and robust appearance.
ROLE
3D Modeling
CNC Lathing
CNC Milling
Sewing
3D MODELING
I used a combination of Seimens NX and Fusion 360 to sculpt and engineer the wrist ring with the intention of CNC lathing as the final output process.
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION
I modeled the wrist rings to attach/detach with neodymium magnets so that the gloves could be removed with a pull.
MANUFACTURING
Combination CNC milling and CNC lathing of 6061 Aluminum produced a precision product with +/-.5mm tolerance.
EASY SOLUTION
As the primary use case for this particular space suit was for costuming and photography, I opted for a neodymium magnet connection. This simplified the dressing process and mitigated any mild claustrophobia.
DESIGNING FOR CHANGE
Not every space suit leaves our world, but the inspiration that comes from good design will expand into the universe.

RESULTS AND TAKEAWAYS
This upgrade was a significant improvement to the previous component. The speed with which today’s technology allows for a truly surprising project turnaround.
Key takeaways from this project are:
Future potential: Not only will the new wrist rings extend the life of this suit, but will encourage the client to plan in detail for more robust upgrades in the future.
Communication speed: Rapid development and prototyping can make time seem infinite for small changes. By encouraging a narrow window of time for feedback, I was able to remain within the expected timeline.
