EXODUS ERA
OVERVIEW
I was approached by the EDM group Exodus Era to design a unique set of goggles that could be worn as a character representation of their group aesthetic.
The goal for this project was to create a unique design that is also able to house hundreds of addressable LEDs that are able to communicate with a DMX protocol, allowing for on-stage control of the lighting effects.

GATHERING DATA
Using state-of-the-art scanning equipment, I digitize the likeness of the end user to ensure a perfect fit
CONCEPT
An initial wireframe sketch kicks off the design phase, drawing out aspects of the scope the client has not yet considered.
3D MODEL: BASE
The base of the design is sculpted to fit the client comfortably. This component will be the primary aesthetic as well as the base for accessory features and lighting.
3D MODEL: LENS
A combination lens and electronics housing is designed to perfectly slide into the base. I designed a method to include prescription lenses in the lens frame per client request.
3D MODEL: ACCESSORIES
Ear covers and back plate both designed to be removable so as to be replaced with alternative aesthetic options.
REFINED DEVELOPMENT
By anticipating unexpected use cases, I plan for the best possible design layout to guarantee safety and comfort.
The design is best if it can be viewed from and approved in every possible perspective and framework. This comprehensive approach ensures that all aspects and details are thoroughly examined and appreciated, enhancing the overall quality and effectiveness of the design solution. This is important for this particular client, who will be photographed in all lighting varieties and in different angles.
A design is not complete until it is fully approved in all perceivable angles.
PROTOTYPES
3D Printing technology enables the creation of rapid prototypes, which allows me to quickly test for comfort and fit, while also assuring a seamless and perfect integration of components in their final products.
ELECTRONICS
Research and development led to perfectly fitting addressable LEDs, seamlessly controlled using DMX protocol.
WIRE ROUTING
I drafted unique wiring pathways to assure the most comfortable fit with the least wear and tear on the electronics over time.
INTERNAL LAYOUT
Significant research and development was applied to determine the best options for light diffusion within a very limited space.
FINISH / TEXTURE
I perfect the finish of master prototype, since any irregularity in the mold positive will be forever represented in each subsequent cast.
INTEGRATED ASSEMBLY
All of the features of the scope are finally realized in the final assembly where form and function are married.
RESULTS AND TAKEAWAYS
It was a true honor to be tasked with not only a functioning consumer electronics tool, but also being able to artistically guide the brand aesthetic for Exodus Era.
Key takeaways from this project are:
Lens clarity-to-reflectivity ratio: One of the goals I hoped to achieve was to have a light gradient, diffused, and set behind an additional lens with a reflective film. This proved to be a challenge in maintaining a desirable lumen output.
Comfort and fit: Sometimes perfect fit can be too perfect over a long enough period. Additional scaled options could allow for an additional mm or two, which would help accommodate a thicker foam liner.
